What would I do without yoga? I mentioned two post

What would I do without yoga? I mentioned two posts back that I meditate and medicate. Both things are vital for my mental health.

Yoga helps me still the fluctuations of the mind, and it helps me bend instead of break when a huge life challenge comes my way.

Challenges, I've had a few: growing up without a mother from the age of 5 (although my grandmother and father stood in as best as they could). An eating disorder that almost killed me. Major depressive disorder and anxiety. Being a single mom on welfare in my mid-forties. A close brush with colon cancer. And so on and so forth.

And honestly, it doesn't stop. I'm in the middle of a personal shitstorm right now. BUT, as I was telling a lifelong friend, I have NO idea what I would do without yoga. I am eternally grateful for the daily practice.

What would I do without the breathwork, without the knowledge that every moment I am dealing with a struggle is yoga?

What would I do without yoga asana (the poses, the flow on the mat), without the meditation, without the feeling that at some point I can just stop fighting the current and just flow?

What do you turn to when things go wrong, as they sometimes will?

#MindedPartner I am 58 and have dealt with anxiety and depression starting at the age of 17.

My first major depressive episode was pretty scary. My body felt like lead and life didn’t feel worth living. I had two more severe episodes of major depression, one of which landed me in the ER at the age of 31.

Anxiety can sound like a buzzword, but I will never forget the day I was driving with my two young children in the back seat, and I had a full-blown panic attack, a few months after moving from Spain to Florida. I was 41.

My heart raced, I had tunnel-vision, I thought I was having a stroke. I pulled over and sobbed. My kids didn’t deserve this and, frankly, neither did I.

I took myself to a psychiatrist, who helped me understand how a certain combination of meds could help my particular case. We’d come a long way since my early days of struggling with mental health. Within a month, I felt stronger and more stable emotionally.

To this day, I meditate and medicate, with #ALittleHelpFromMyMeds. I have shared this journey countless times online and on this platform in particular. Meds are not always the answer for everyone, but when they are, there should be no shame in taking them.

We really don’t have to suffer in silence or suffer at all.

#ad #TenaPartner I did not love my body or myself as a whole when I was young.

I suffered from a life-threatening eating disorder for two decades. It impacted both myself and everyone around me. The pivotal moment that shifted my perception of my body was when I had my first child at 37.

My entire pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum was a crash course in self love, despite including common issues such as incontinence.

My first baby turned 21 a few days ago, and I still can’t believe she came out of my body!

At 58, I am still embracing #MyEvolvingBody. A few years ago, I was shocked by the sagging and crepey skin I saw in some pictures of me at the beach.

After the initial shock, I decided to share those pictures online. It was so freeing! I didn’t spend my youth being unkind to my body only to do it all over again. Plus, I’ve lost too many friends too soon, to be fretting about the marks of the passage of time.
